Family & Friends Journaling Group

November 9 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

ISPS UK are delighted to introduce a new, free online journaling group which is for family members and friends of people with lived experience of psychosis. The pilot group will be co-hosted by ISPS UK trustees Julia and Jen on the second Saturday of alternative months, beginning in November 2024. All members of ISPS are welcome.

Q: What is journaling?

A: Journaling is a creative and informal practice of expressive writing. We start with a journaling prompt and then spend about 10 minutes responding to this in our journals. We follow this with a sharing and discussion space – but please note, you are never required to share your writing or to speak if you don’t wish to. The session is 2 hours long and there will be time for 3 writing prompts per session (the prompts are provided by the facilitators).

Q: Why is this group limited to friends/family members?

A: Helping to care for someone who has experienced or is experiencing psychosis can be challenging, confusing and emotionally draining. And dealing with mainstream mental health services can be often make things worse, leaving you feeling frustrated and exhausted. At ISPS UK we recognise that the particular needs and concerns of friends and family members are often overlooked in the urgency of a crisis situation; we also know how important it is to be heard and to feel supported. This journaling group will offer a space in which to explore the issues that are relevant to friends/family members, and to connect with others who have had similar experiences.

Q: When will the journaling group take place?

A: We have set up three dates in the calendar, in order to conduct a pilot in the first instance. The dates and times are:

  • Saturday 9th November 2024 14:00 to 16:00
  • Saturday 11th January 2025 14:00 to 16:00
  • Saturday 8th March 2025 14:00 to 16:00

After this initial pilot period, we will welcome feedback and will review the project for things such as timing, frequency and format of the sessions. It may be felt that a longer session time is wanted; or a move to monthly sessions. All participants will be invited to share their feedback and preferences with us.

Q: Must I commit to every session?

A: No, you may attend any or all of the dates. These will be stand-alone sessions.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?

A: Just bring along a notebook or journal or even loose sheets, on which to write, and a pen or pencil that is comfortable to write with. This will be your own personal space in which to record your thoughts, feelings and ideas – so please do find a way to keep this journal secure and private to yourself.

Q: How do I get involved?

A: This group is open to ISPS UK members only, if you would like to become a member, please follow this link.

The details on how to register for the event have been sent to members. If you are a member and would like to receive these details again, please email admin@ispsuk.org.
